Ballet of the Dolls
The Ballet of the Dolls troupe, under the artistic direction of Myron Johnson, has been adding its own special brand of sparkle and glamour to local stages for over 25 years. And in this particular category Johnson and company actually get credit for two performances — last fall's vividly colored, fantasy-driven The Peruvian Nightingale and their own darkly comic twist on Cinderella, created for the holidays. Both works drew upon familiar fairy tales, but Johnson has never been one to settle on the tried and true when creating his original works. Using influences as diverse as Peruvian singing diva Yma Sumac (Nightingale) and dark-hearted cartoonist Charles Addams (Cinderella), Johnson created imaginative, gloriously strange, and ultimately heart-filled works that gave the Dolls performers (some veterans, some newer to the party) an opportunity to shine with the brilliance of a thousand sequins.
