For many producers, the temptation to find a particular style and stick with it ad nauseam can consume their work. Big Cats takes the Best Producer crown in a city brimming with talent for doing precisely the opposite, expanding his own palette and adapting his signature style with each new full-length work he crafts. There's the clear motivation to maintain a distinctive vibe but to exhibit growth, and last year's Pangaea with Toki Wright found him putting together his most full-fledged expression of this dynamic. The minimalist Pangaea somehow juggled the live-band, sample-chopping techniques of For My Mother, the stripped-down grooves that defined the Tribe & Big Cats' Space, and modern hip-hop's trap drums and spare synths. Big Cats' advances are even more impressive for their subtlety.
