Mixed Blood Theatre took a big chance and reaped major rewards with the risky Colossal. A play about a crippled dancer-turned-football player and his love for a fellow teammate could easily have become a silly, overbearing exercise. Instead, the booming production (there was a live drum line) and kinetic performances carried the day. The actors performed much of the show in pads, engaging in full-contact moments that were exhausting just to watch. Yet for all the show's high-octane bluster, the best moment came at the end, as the wheelchair-using son and his dancer father shared a silent, moving solo across the stage.
