Ken Gonzales-Day: "Shadowlands"

California-based photographer, researcher, and writer Ken Gonzales-Day mines the history of racial violence in the United States through his provocative work, which was on view this year at the Minnesota Museum of American Art in “Shadowlands.” By digitally altering photographs, he erased lynching victims, shifting the focus of those gruesome scenes to the crowd watching the horrific spectacle. Other work on view in this exhibit, curated by Christopher Atkins, included photographs documenting the artist’s own journey to find the trees that were used for lynchings, and composite works juxtaposing lynching re-enactments with photographs of protests against police violence today. In all, it was a compelling and thought-provoking exhibition.
