the Twin Cities
When it’s not serving as south Minneapolis’ most reliable joint for live and loud music, the Hex is doubling as the neighborhood’s coziest dive, a good place for calloused hands to grip simple, cheap, and icy American beers. There’s pool if you feel bored, pull-tabs if you feel lucky, and little else. A few months ago, some guy got drunk, hooked the Hex’s fence to his trailer, and drove off. Owner Bill Hepp played it cool: Got the drunk’s ID, got him to cut a check, didn’t press charges. At a place like this, even a big, crazy thing gets reduced to no big deal, and the mundane — a couple brews and company — is somehow made special. It’s all you want in a dive.
