BEST HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE

Whitney Taney
Edina
You don't have to know anything about high school tennis to know that Whitney Taney is good. Just look at her record: 166-0. That's 150 singles matches, 16 doubles matches, and zero losses in the Edina senior's five varsity years, easily the longest winning streak in the history of Minnesota junior tennis. Through it all, Taney collected two state doubles championships and three consecutive state singles titles, the last one coming in October when Taney beat Burnsville junior Tooli Wilkins 6-0, 6-3 to end her perfect high school career. Even more incredible is the fact that Taney has neither a power serve nor a dependable net game, and yet she dropped just two sets during those 166 games. Her secret is smarts: Rarely choosing the risky shot, Taney opts for a baseline strategy that emphasizes consistency and eliminates unforced errors. Nationally, she's 30-13, twice having gone to the National Open Finals, where she won the singles and doubles titles in 2005. Taney has taken a scholarship from the University of Michigan, where she will be the Wolverines' top freshman recruit this fall.
