Readers' Choice: Taste of India

There are a lot of reasons to love Gandhi Mahal: the handmade, quilted tablecloths; the sitar player in the corner; the authentic, thoughtful decor; and the quietly courteous staff. But most of all it's the food. Gandhi Mahal's northern Indian cuisine hits all the right notes: expertly fried samosas (the tamarind dipping sauce is a favorite), a pitch-perfect chicken tikka masala, delicious fresh-made lassis, and a wide selection for vegetarians, all served with an understated grace. Best yet, the portions are beyond generous, so it's hardly a challenge to stretch one meal into three (and really, what's better than the smell of garlic naan reheating in the oven?). With prices comparable to other local Indian establishments of much lesser quality—and a liquor license on the way—this Lake and Minnehaha treat is a no-brainer.

My Voice Nation Help

It's alright- pretty good even- but its not even close to the vegetarian on central in northeast.

I love Gandhi Mahal! New vegetarian menu, fresh made yogurt lassi, and the Gandhi Thali are enough to keep me coming for years. My most recent favorite dish on their ever evolving menu is the dewani handi--a vegetarian dish made with cauliflower, broccoli, eggplants and spinach. I am always excited to try new vegetarian dishes, and this one is a payoff. How do they get such a balance of spice into such a dish I will never know.I usually go for the buffet, which is around ten bucksIf you have never been there before, it is in the Longfellow neighborhood, 1.5 blocks from the Hiawatha light rail, which is convenient for me because I am a student.
