Sauced

The North Side may have its share of violence and foreclosed homes, but it now also has Sauced, a contemporary bistro with food-forward ambitions and a friendly attitude. The cute brick building is located in the sleepy Camden neighborhood, which has recently seen an influx of first-time homeowners with foodie sensibilities--even their toddlers have a taste for mussels and scallops. John Conklin's menu is all about the sauces--mole-citrus butter on the chicken skewers, blueberry barbecue on pork scaloppine--and they are good enough to name a restaurant after. The sandwiches are great, too, particularly the "Crack Burger," which is as addictive as its name implies. Its grilled sourdough bun, melty blue cheese, and roasted tomatoes combine with a ladle of velvety veal stock into one big umami bomb. Sure, the condo developers are probably already on their way, but in the meantime, enjoy the fact that you can sip a nice glass of cabernet at Sauced and still feel the bass of a passing car stereo vibrating through the banquette. - Rachel Hutton
