Like their brethren the cocktail and the coffee drink, modern-day desserts too often fall into the showy, self-involved artifice of their makers. Just because the masters of their trade can do something, doesn't always mean they should. Sometimes, you just want some booze, some caffeine, and some sugar.
The salted caramel hazelnut tart at Eastside manages to be sophisticated but not haughty. One of the best desserts of our year, a Nutella-like ganache fills a pretty, molded tart that's then gilded with salty caramel ice cream, hazelnuts, and chocolate crunchies. That's it. Graceful enough for the sophisticate, but at its heart gratifying as a Chocolate Salted Nut Roll with ice cream on top.
